Whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have committed. And He pardons much.

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.

Reference: Quran: Ibrahim 14:22

Quran: Ibrahim 14:22
Translation: Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

After the matter has been finally decided Satan will say: "Surely whatever Allah promised you was true; as for me, I went back on the promise I made to you. I had no power over you except that I called you to my way and you responded to me. So, do not blame me but blame yourselves. Here, neither I can come to your rescue, nor can you come to mine. I disavow your former act of associating me in the past with Allah. A grievous chastisement inevitably lies ahead for such wrong-doers."

Quran: Al-Kahf 18:29
Translation: Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

And say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “˹This is˺ the truth from your Lord. Whoever wills let them believe, and whoever wills let them disbelieve.” Surely We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire whose walls will ˹completely˺ surround them. When they cry for aid, they will be aided with water like molten metal, which will burn ˹their˺ faces. What a horrible drink! And what a terrible place to rest!

Quran 76:3 Man Chooses: "Allah (swt) has guided you, whether you choose to be grateful or not."

Reference: Quran: Al-Insan 76:3

Quran: Al-Insan 76:3
Translation: Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

Surely We showed him the Right Path, regardless of whether he chooses to be thankful or unthankful (to his Lord).

Reference  : Quran: Al-Insan 76:3

Note: 1. That is, Allah did not just leave man to himself after giving him the powers of knowledge and reason, but also guided him so that he knows which is the path of gratefulness and which of ungratefulness, so that whichever path he chooses in his later life, he himself is responsible for it.

2. Allah (swt) states in 8:24 that he intervenes between man and his heart, and hence, our inclinations are towards good. However, as stated in 17:15 and 76:3 it is up to us to choose to submit to these inclination toward good or to act on our own volition against our better judgement.

Note: An oft misunderstood verse, this verse must be viewed in the context of all the verses above. This verse does not support predestination as others may claim. This verse simply states that man's abilities are constrained by that which Allah (swt) has permitted. Man cannot, for example, change the direction of the Sun, unless Allah (swt) grants man such an ability. All power, ultimately, rests in Allah's (swt) hands. Our abilities are given to us, by his leave.
